ELAN externally controlled vocabulary (ecv)

Signbank can export all gloss entries as an XML file that is supported by ELAN.

To add the externally controlled vocabulary to ELAN, follow these instructions.

It is stronly adviced to Use the latest version of ELAN! The externally controlled vocabulary might not work as expected on old versions of ELAN (versions older than 2015)

1. Click: Edit -> Edit controlled vocabularies... (Ctrl-Shift-C)

In ELAN's topmost 'toolbar'

2. In the window, click External CV

3. A window appears asking for an URL

Enter the URL for the Signbank XML ecv export. You can find the URL on the infopage in Signbank. If you can't see that page, you have to ask the admin or someone else for the link.

Once you have inserted the link, click 'close' on the 'Edit controlled vocabulary' page.

4. After that: Click: Type -> Add new linguistic type... (Ctrl-Shift-T)

Enter a Type Name for this linguistic type

In Use Controlled Vocabulary, choose the external controlled vocabulary you just added.

5. Click: Tier -> Add New Tier (Ctrl-T)

Enter Tier Name

Choose Linguistic Type (the one you just added).

6. Do your normal annotations, a list of Glosses from the ECV appear.

If you want to add a gloss outside of this vocabulary, hold shift and doubleclick, ELAN lets you to type a new name.
