Preview Alpha 6 Pre-release
Pre-release

This release focuses on getting the licensing information more usable. The data is now organized first by license, then by artist, and finally the list of works by that artist for that license. Additionally, there's a "copy to clipboard" button to make it super easy to copy that info over to wherever you need it.

But that's not all! Individual layers can now be exported, the UI had another round of small tweaks, a major performance bug was squashed, and there's a randomize button for when you're looking for inspiration.

Preview Alpha 5 Pre-release
Pre-release

This preview release marks a major milestone in layout, performance, content, and functionality. Here's some highlights:

  • The full Liberated Pixel Cup asset set is now included with working .spec files (well, the art which fully complied with the base sheet actions, anyway).
  • Hue, saturation, and brightness sliders are available on a per-layer basis, allowing for extreme customization.
  • Performance has been substantially improved, though be aware that it can be a memory hog over long periods of usage (this will be fixed later).
  • There's been a lot of UX and UI polish, making the tool actually usable now.
  • ...and your typical slew of bug fixes along the way.

Sprite Magic is now at a point where feedback on usability would be very welcome, so do try it out and let me know what you think!

EDIT: There was a bug in the packager which caused this packaged build to be non-functional. I didn't bother to update the packager script for this revision because - hey - it's a preview release. At any rate, I updated the packaged version so that it'll run, just be aware that you'll want a later version of setup.py if you want to make your own builds with build.bat.

Preview Alpha 4 Pre-release
Pre-release

This release sees some polish on the UI, bringing Sprite Magic closer to usability by the general public. The layer up/down and close buttons are clearer now thanks to new icons, the game type selector has been moved to the main menu, the hue selector is more sensical, and the preview selector now shows the chosen FPS for the preview. Some critical bugs have been fixed, too.

Layer colorization has been added to this release, and the UI continues to become a bit more sensical. More .spec files added as well, as the usable art collection continues to grow.

Please note that changing the coloration on a layer may take a few seconds, for which there's no UI feedback yet. Thank you for your patience.

In this preview, spritesheet exporting is now available via the File menu. Simply get your preview looking the way you like, then File->Export Combined Sheet. The result will be a single .png that combines all of the actions, directions, and layers.

This preview also includes an expanded set of .spec files for the "Liberated Pixel Cup - Female" game type (more to come on this front).

This is a preview alpha, so that people can see what the fuss is about. Contains an extremely buggy version with just enough .spec files in place to get across the idea of what we're doing.
