Car Sharing Microservice Architecture

This repository contains a sample microservice application for car sharing. It has very few functionality, but I designed it mainly to practice implementing some patterns typically used. Authentication, authorization and security have not been considered for simplicity.

Currently, this project is under development!

Architecture Overview

At high level the architecture is composed of six services (rent, customer, vehicle, rent orchestrator, payment, notification) and a mobile application. The mobile app interacts with the system only through the API Gateway. The backend services exchange messages using Kafka as message broker.

In particular:

  • The Rent Service is responsible for creating bookings and searching the rents of a given customer

  • The Customer Service is responsible for registering/searching customers and updating driving license details

  • The Vehicle Service is responsible for searching vehicles (even in a specific area) and retrieving details and rates of vehicle models

  • The Rent Orchestrator Service is responsible for managing the entire rental process (booking, cancellation, start, end)

  • The Payment Service is responsible for managing payments and pre-debt authorizations. It uses the Stripe API

  • The Notification Service is responsible for sending notifications (e.g. email, sms) to the customers. It uses the Twilio API

Try It

To quickly start the application you can use Docker Compose.

From the root folder, enter:

# Execute the build and the unit tests
./gradlew build jibDockerBuild

# Execute the integration tests
./gradlew intTest

# Start the application
docker-compose up

# Wait for the application to start
# Then register the debezium connectors to the Kafka Connect platform
./scripts/register-debezium-connectors.sh

cURL

# Create a customer
curl -X 'POST' -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
     -d '{"firstName": "Mario", "lastName": "Rossi", "dateOfBirth": "1999-09-06", "fiscalCode": "MRORSS99G27P112J", "email": "[email protected]", "phoneNumber": "+393251935161", "driverLicense": {"licenseNumber": "LCSN0000", "issueDate": "2017-10-10", "expiryDate": "2028-09-06"}}' \
     http://localhost/customers

# Get vehicle models
curl http://localhost/vehicles/models

# Get all the vehicles
curl http://localhost/vehicles

# Book a vehicle
# Substitute the placeholders
curl -X 'POST' -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"customerId": "customer_id_here", "vehicleId": "vehicle_id_here"}' http://localhost/rents
