Discussing Transifex and SVN
2:50 PM<Kunda> is the current source file for 1.5 in Transifex the most current source file in SVN ?
2:50 PM <chitz> only if somebody has updated transifex
2:51 PM <chitz> we did disable the automatic update
2:51 PM <Kunda> right
2:52 PM <Kunda> so the current or previous source file we had/have in Transifex is missing some information like context of where the string is in the scribus trunk
2:52 PM <Kunda> right ?
2:52 PM <chitz> yes, I think thats the case
2:52 PM <Kunda> so... is that a problem ?
2:53 PM <chitz> only if a translator wants to check a string source
2:53 PM <chitz> so most probably not
2:54 PM <Kunda> i mean.. if people have been working on that source file and it's different then the one in SVN (besides just translations...i'm talking difference in other lets call it 'metadata') how do we diff it to see if strings have been updated in Transifex that can be implemented in to SVN?
2:55 PM <chitz> the thing is, Transifex is independent of the actual source file
2:56 PM <chitz> so if people are translating an "old" source file, the only problem could be that they are translating already changed/deleted strings
2:56 PM <Kunda> or another way to ask that is: can we take all the translations that have been done in transifex and implement the specific translations that are missing in SVN and then reupload the source file so that people don't have to go back and use the translation memory to confirm the right translation?
2:57 PM <chitz> in any case I would first upload the new source to Transifex so that the resulting translation actually match what's currently in SVN
2:58 PM <chitz> I think the biggest issue atm is that again some languages had changes in SVN bypassing Transifex
2:58 PM <Kunda> but then people who have done work thus far will need to reconfirm the changes they made even if the strings have not changed...right ?
2:58 PM <chitz> I don't think so
2:59 PM <chitz> if the string stayed the same
2:59 PM <chitz> Transifex should not consider "metadata" like source context
2:59 PM <Kunda> chitz, we can just grep the svn to see what languages have been submitted to SVN directly and I'll confirm if the author doesn't want to use transifex. If that is the case I will disable that language in Transifex
3:00 PM <Kunda> disable = not have any maintainers
3:00 PM <chitz> as long as there are not already translations in Transifex...
3:00 PM <chitz> we can also check against the scribus-translations repo
3:00 PM <chitz> there we can easily see what has been done in Transifex
3:01 PM <Kunda> yea..i really want to understand how that works
3:01 PM <Kunda> i saw the .tx directory with teh config file
3:01 PM <Kunda> but i don't know the workflow
3:02 PM <chitz> well in the end: dev changes the source lang --> "tx push -s" to upload to Transifex
3:02 PM <Kunda> ok... so we can use the translation repo to see those languages that have bypassed Transifex and see where they are in comparison to the progress they've made in Transifex
3:02 PM <chitz> dev wants to integrate translations: "tx pull -a[f]"
3:03 PM <chitz> not quite: we would have to compare SVN (bypassing Transifex) and scribus-translations (progress in Transifex)
3:03 PM <Kunda> and the dev only needs to pull that repo locally and run tx within the .tx directory ?
3:04 PM <Kunda> chitz, can we start that process ?
3:04 PM <chitz> no, ideally the .tx config is in the main scribus SVN
3:04 PM <chitz> the scribus-translation repo is basically just a Transifex backup
3:05 PM <Kunda> ok
3:05 PM <chitz> but the whole thing becomes more complicated due to the fact, that certain languages should *not* be translated through Transifex
3:05 PM <chitz> but I agree that thos languages should not be added in Transifex
3:06 PM <Kunda> not added or just disabled ?
3:06 PM <chitz> this would spare us from having to build scripts around tx
3:06 PM <Kunda> because if they aren't added then people will keep requesting them
3:06 PM <chitz> I would remove them from Transifex
3:06 PM <Kunda> well..i guess they'll request either way
3:07 PM <Kunda> so ok.. not adding them
3:07 PM <chitz> because a *tx pull" will get all languages available in Transifex
3:07 PM <Kunda> we can also tell tx pull what languages we don't want it to get, right ?
3:08 PM <chitz> well that's the catch: apparently there are "official" translators for certain languages that have the authority of excluding others...
3:08 PM <Kunda> "this would spare us from having to build scripts around tx" <--- then we'd need to use scripts around tx
3:08 PM <Kunda> right
3:08 PM <chitz> i'd have to check the tx docu again if one could configure the "active" languages
3:09 PM <chitz> otherwise --> scripts :(
3:09 PM <Kunda> The deal is only official translators will be able to submit via transifex
3:09 PM <Kunda> sorry
3:09 PM <Kunda> The deal is only official translators will be able to submit via SVN
3:09 PM <Kunda> no one else
3:09 PM <Kunda> to limit confusion
3:10 PM <Kunda> well the point is Transifex is a great service and we're getting a lot translated because of it.
3:10 PM <chitz> yeah but the issue is that if there is a official translator that is allowed to bypass Transifex, this language will not be able to use Transifex
3:10 PM <chitz> ever
3:11 PM <Kunda> ok..elaborate.. I'm not sure what you mean by 'ever' ?
3:11 PM <chitz> well
3:12 PM <chitz> if one pushes a translation into Transifex from SVN, this translation will replace anything that is already in Transifex
3:12 PM <Kunda> all we wouldn need to do is enable the language and upload it's specific source file...and change the tx scripts ?
3:14 PM <Kunda> ' this translation will replace anything that is already in Transifex' just for that language.. not the source file.. right ?
3:14 PM <Kunda> i mean.. not the main source file
3:14 PM <chitz> I think it's also more of a organizational issue: by allowing some translators to bypass Transifex Scribus becomes dependent on these individuals
3:14 PM <chitz> yes, only this language
3:14 PM <Kunda> well we dpn
3:15 PM <Kunda> well, we don't want to alienate the long time translation contributors
3:15 PM <Kunda> some of them resent that Transifex is not libre
3:15 PM <Kunda> or they don't like the interface
3:15 PM <Kunda> or they prefer QLinguist
3:15 PM <Kunda> or whatever
3:15 PM <chitz> btw a Translator could also use Transifex just a "transport" and upload their .tx file
3:15 PM <chitz> no need to use the web-ui to do the actual translation
3:15 PM <Kunda> oh
3:16 PM <Kunda> ok
3:16 PM <Kunda> lets talk about that..and make some documentation for people to use as a workflow
3:16 PM <Kunda> can tx be used for that ?
3:16 PM <chitz> tx is more a devel tool
3:17 PM <Kunda> I don't want to take up too much more of your time. we can talk more about this another time as well
3:17 PM <chitz> i mean: intended for devs integrating the finished translations
3:17 PM <Kunda> so how would they bypass the web ui ? you mean just use the web ui for u/ling the .ts file
3:17 PM <Kunda> ?
3:17 PM <chitz> I think I have some time next week to think about this in more detail
3:18 PM <Kunda> chitz, ok.. cool. I'll throw this chat up in the translation repo
3:18 PM <chitz> yes, there is a "upload translation" link in Transifex
3:18 PM <Kunda> so we have a reference
3:18 PM <Kunda> yes..via the GUI
3:18 PM <chitz> they would still have to log-in to Transifex
3:18 PM <Kunda> but is there one via the CLI ?
3:18 PM <Kunda> aka..API
3:19 PM <chitz> for translators?
3:19 PM <Kunda> yea
3:19 PM <Kunda> prolly not
3:19 PM <chitz> there is an API
3:19 PM <chitz> but i don't know if that's intended for translators
3:19 PM <Kunda> ok
3:20 PM <Kunda> well then translators could either upload it themselves or give it to the devs to do it and the devs could do it via the API
3:21 PM <Kunda> chitz, thanks mate
3:21 PM <Kunda> appreciate your help
