Tracking The International Space Station

Using an ISS API and leaflet.js with mapbox to display position of ISS. This was part of a video series I was following by The Coding Train on Youtube. Link to the playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRqwX-V7Uu6YxDKpFzf_2D84p0cyk4T7X

API used: https://api.wheretheiss.at/v1/satellites/25544 screenshotOfWebsite

What can this do?

  • Track ISS from an API
  • Has toggle to display path from moment of loading webpage.
  • Has toggle to center display on ISS.
  • Displays latitude and longitude as a popup binded to the marker
  • Marker can be open and closed

Learning outcomes:

  • How to use the fetch function to grab data from an API
  • What JSON format is
  • What promises are
  • How to use await inside of async functions
  • Basic leaflet.js functionality
  • Grabbing map data from mapbox and importance of attributions

Possible future additions:

  • Seperate map into light and dark side
  • Show a visualisation of altitude and velocity
