Nice initiative but I hope you never force it on us.

I always want to be able to see the stared content of the people I follow in chronological order by default. I can see myself venture to an alternative feed if I feel adventurous but this is the exception rather than the norm.

I am very appreciative of the work you do at Github. And I'm hopeful that I do not come off as too pessimistic. This feedback is only because I have seen many great products get silently ruined by greedy timeline algorithms.

This is fantastic. I had a new follower today and had no fucking way to see it anywhere, no notification nothing, after getting this installed, my old feed was back and I could see the follower, as we have all been used to. This new feed still sucks and it seems like no changes have been made to give us the original view.

Regarding Profile cards from "Recommended based on people you follow".
Username followed by name (if provided) looks bad. Name isn't related. username should be enough.

Circle-based profile pictures are pretty old-school. Also, profile pictures are too large.

The contents inside a card release can be quite messy.

• Heading elements can be transformed to p, keep heading for release title only.
• Paragraphs should have a smaller margin-bottom size
• author + pic displayed outside should be enough. Instead of showing again the author / repository you can just name the repo.
• "Read more" link is very... Wordpress-like. Devs know how to click

Personally, as a GitHub Organizations user, I would much prefer this whole are be replaced by dashboards and links that make me more productive. For example, I use GitHub Projects constantly, but it takes so many clicks to get there. Perhaps let me Organize/flag repos from my Organization/Team to include links and analysis for. Really, I don't want to see anything from my personal account by default if I also have an Organization account.

Yep. I go to GitHub primarily to interact with repositories. Primarily through reading and responding to Issues, and/or through contributing code and/or documentation. And it is primarily through those repositories interactions that I interact with other people who are interacting with repositories.

I really couldn't care less who starred what! When I see someone who has starred a repository, and I see that same person has starred hundreds of repositories (not uncommon), then clearly they are not so discriminating and their star means nothing! As someone mentioned in another post here, if I really want to see what someone else is doing then I can "follow" or "subscribe". Please, please don't force an involuntary feed on me!! If you really want to make GitHub useful, then give me the ability to choose which user actions I can subscribe to on a per-user (following) basis. For example, maybe I do want to know if a particular user stars a repository. On the other hand, maybe I only want to know if that user opens a PR, etc.

Ideally, I would like to see my recent repositories in the large center portion of the page. If anything, feeds should be off to the side, or on another tab, if present at all.

And the recent repositories should be sorted with those that I interact with most frequently at the top of the list. As it is, the "Recent Repositories" on the left side is clearly not the most recent repositories at least in terms of my interaction with them. The repositories that I interact with most frequently and most recently are burried deep in the list. What a pain!

Clearly, very clearly the interface is not designed with productivity in mind. If you can't do that, then please, please, please at least make it configurable as to what appears on the page (and where) so that users themselves can at least design it with their own productivity in mind.

Somehow I get the feeling that this is all going in one ear and out the other and that Microsoft is going to do whatever they want with GitHub anyway and just fill it with click bait and turn it into just another social media platform. Uggh!

The 'For You' is not for me. I like the new categorized 'Stars', of which I have a bunch of 'Investigate - [topic]' star categories since starring doesn't mean I want to 'follow' and see what starring or PR a user is doing — that is what 'follow' is for, starring for me is like bookmarks (and like bookmarks are a vague indication of interest, not meaning the starred repo is something I would go the trenches for).

And as you point out, the existing feed mechanism could already do this. If anything adding filtering and sorting (more control) to the existing option would be better than taking away control.

As someone else said, if this doesn't stay out of my way, I'll be switching to a different centralize public repo, or going with one of the self-hosted options. I mostly want to get stuff done, and only want to spend a little time on finding out about other things I might be interested in using or participating in.

Yes I agree. And also it requires so many clicks to get to the commits section on Github.com. Would be useful if all the commits are shown on the repository main page.

I do not understand, why github tries to become some kind of social media platform now.
The feed is already full of irrelevant stuff.
I really hope you will be able to disable this feature and also opt-out being used for other feeds.

I wouldn't mind seeing the starts of discussions in repo's I follow on a feed, what's disappointing me with the current implementation is I seem to get more 'for you' content than things I follow. Github isn't selling advertising, I see no reason for it to try and keep me on the feed longer than I need to be.

• Algorithmic feeds are a social platform plague that needs to be stopped
• Starring things doesn't mean I want to see their updates -- that's what Watching/Following is for; please don't mix them up
• Unable to mute update types and recommendations doesn't make the feed useful

I think this whole feature would be better called "Discover" or "Explore" and be placed in a tab that I can check at my discretion instead of it being part of my daily workflow.

Please allow the option to permanently avoid this too. Many sites introduce a FYP and then default to that on every main page load. It has a major negative impact on productivity, and I pay for a subscription to avoid things like this.

I'm truly hating this change, triggered me to click "Send Feedback" and see posts here. I hope they revert it back. GitHub's homepage became useless to me after the new rollout.

I love change and new things .. but the new homepage doesn't help me at all and none of the content is meaningful to me. It's a step backwards.
The old homepage, I don't remember being amazing per se. But I do recall on multiple occasions: the thing I went to GitHub.com for in the first place happened to have a link on the homepage.
That never happens to me anymore with the new homepage. It makes me want the old one back.

I still can't get a news feed showing stars and PRs on my own repos. Right now I have no reliable overview of my own content - the actual only reason I am on github.

Why is it that practically every feature Github is adding these days does more harm than good? The news feed is broken. Self-hosted Action Runners are unmanageable. No one asked for forced 2FA, yet here it is. No one asked for forced codelens on the website. Any day now Copilot is going to rebrand itself as Pilot and reveal that humans have long since been locked out of the Github building.

a) I can't see what people I follow are doing (which is all I care about anyways)
b) My open source repos have gotten less stars (since people who follow me also have the same problem as in [a])

Right now we're in the "finally, it abuses the business customers" part of that story. I say this because there are a lot of paying customers (myself included) complaining about how this change makes their day-to-day experience on Github much worse.

I can't see what people I follow are doing

I've already identified one bug that prevents me from seeing what people I follow are doing (confirmed by support). Part of the problem for me is that GitHub doesn't let you know when a bug is preventing items from showing up in the feed. A simple "we ran into an issue fetching [ITEM TYPE]" would be fine, but as it is it's like these bugs are just silently ignored. And it's been more than a month since support flagged the bug I found for the engineering team to investigate, with seemingly no resolution, so I'm getting the feeling that fixing the dashboard is not a priority.

I'm not saying the bug I found is affecting you (mine had to do with following organizations), but perhaps there's another bug that's silently failing and preventing you from seeing the items you want to see.

Well, to look on the bright side, I can at least use this as a lesson on what not to do when deploying changes to info feeds or catching errors 🙃

I use Github primarily for work. Most of my repos are private and are part of an Org. I would like to be able to see activity from those repos in the feed on the main page. Or at least the activity of my coworkers that I follow. Since I don't follow any actively updating public repos, my feed is currently blank.
