Questions from Yuting Chu, MBA, CSPO:

Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ytchu/

Product

  • When developing pricing plans, how do you establish Individual plans and Team plans?
  • When your product has a free version and a paid version, how do you assess whether a feature should be in the free or paid version?
  • How do you go about establishing causation when A/B testing is not possible or if the n-size is too small?
  • What are your thoughts on Causal Inference?
  • What are your thoughts of using probabilities as a replacement/substitute for causation?

Product Strategy

  • When you execute a strategy, there is usually a start date and an end date. How do you determine the end date of a strategy? Or when it's time to revise it? How long do you "push through" in the hopes you will see results? Annually? Quarterly?

Team

  • How do you assess if a software engineer should be removed from the team, placed under Performance Improvement Plan, disciplined, terminated?
  • Who should be creating a professional development/training plans for software engineers? The CTO, VP of Eng, Eng Mgr, Team leads? Or should software engineers just teach themselves on an as-needed basis?
  • how often do Eng teams get idled per year?
How many days of idle time is considered ok/normal/of no concern?
What do you have them do when they are idled other than tech debt?

Metrics and Data

  • Given scale issues, 1% of a userbase could be 10million(userbase is 1bn) or 1% of a userbase could be 10(userbase of 1000). How do you decide if you should go with the percent value or the absolute value when building a feature? ie. a feature that helps color blind people may only benefit 0.5% of the userbase population.

  • When you launch a new feature, you often want to define a quantitative kpi as part of your Definition of Success. ie. This feature will be successful if 3% of our userbase uses it within 90 days. How do you go about defining the initial kpi value? ie. the 3% in this example?

  • When doing Industry or Market research, how do you know when to stop? How granular do you go? There is so much out there. It seems like you can never learn all that there is to know.

  • How do you validate a Value Proposition? A team of 5 can up with 2 value propositions each such that we have 10 value propositions but how do we validate them in a B2B environment? When do we stop wordsmithing a value proposition and just settle on one?

  • Everyone wants a unicorn PM, especially in tech. What are the 3 top (or more ) skills that you think are relevant for a tech PM?
  • There is a lot of debate on defining the roles for Program Managers, Project Managers and Product Managers. What has your experience at Google been like? Is there a clear cut defined role for each or do the responsibilities overlap?

  1. As a Nonprofit, we experience a lot of team member turnover on our project teams. How would you advise going about creating a culture of inclusion that keeps team members connected to the mission under these conditions?
  2. What is your approach to setting goals for product and product teams? How can your framework be translated into the nonprofit sector, when effective nonprofits are measured by their impact on the greater good rather than revenue?
