`|grep button` is good, but if you use xev's built-in event filter, you get the timing information as well. My M720 mouse puts in random scrolling events with (while scrolling button 5 at a regular 200-500ms, I often get bursts of 3-8 button 4 at 50-60ms. Getting the button timing with xev was cool.
