This wiki aims to provide guidelines for the FEI (Film Encoding Initiative) file format.
Film Encoding Initiative, short FEI, was initiated by the Center of Music and Film Informatics at the HFM Detmold as a consistent, XML-based way of encoding cinematic documents in a machine-readable structure.
The underlying idea of FEI originated from Music Encoding Initiative (MEI), a community-driven effort to define guidelines for encoding musical documents.
The conception and development of FEI started out as a research project for students of the master class Audiovisual Arts Computing at the HfM Detmold & HS OWL and has since been introduced to students and film scholars in workshops at the Filmhochschule Babelsberg, as well as the Berlin University of the Arts.

For an overview of available elements, head over to the list of all elements. Learn more about the file structure of FEI or the idea to divide a movie into smaller parts.

If you have any problems or questions, feel free to open an issue.
Like mentioned before, the FEI format is based on the idea of MEI. Therefore, some elements in this documentation are directly inherited from MEI, since they have already proven useful in countless usage scenarios. Instead of documenting them here, we provide a link to the original MEI documentation for now.
