Greetings and Salutations 🌎 🌍 🌏

To the reader: This is part-resume, part-story, and a glimpse into my professional journey.

The Words of History

Highest-value experience: From 2017 to 2020, I was part of an operational team dedicated to transforming a major construction company's approach to technology. I designed, developed, and implemented a tool that managed labor time and cost, material quantity and cost, and task management data for about 50 projects in a dozen industries valued at around 250 million dollars all-in. I trained project managers, coordinators, and site personnel on how to use it. As an electrician, I was particularly passionate about ensuring a seamless experience for field personnel.

I loved this work: developing the tooling, creating the documentation and training resources, and getting in front of site personnel to understand them very close-up. I also deeply value the emotional realities of business, which made working in this environment challenging. Construction is renowned for its rough-edged, broad-stroked, chain-of-command approach to problem-solving. I can handle all that. I did it for eleven years. But I prefer communication over command and found that my environment didn't inspire my best self, so I ultimately decided to pursue other things when COVID got real.

This experience demonstrated how much I enjoy software development and architecture. It was also clear that I enjoyed working in an authentic, collaborative capacity with others. When COVID hit, I enrolled in a boot camp to get a better handle on the full stack. I resolved to myself (and my growing family) that I would pursue a successful, independent career in software. I wanted to combine that with my skills in business (see The Enabled Company below) and love of collaboration. At first, it was very hard. I was on employment insurance, working on small website contracts, working for free to gain experience. I attempted to build a game using React Native. Awesome learning. I touched many technologies and service providers during this time.

Then I co-founded Whippersnapps with a previous colleague in the construction industry. Our mission was to identify unique problems with subject matter experts in any domain and build solutions alongside them for equity. This journey led to the creation of Purchase Order Pro (PO Pro), a PO management tool for construction companies. This is a fully-featured, multi-tenant web, mobile and server application set that supports role-based features complete with account-management delegation ability. I'm pretty proud of this work. I'd like to integrate some of the ideas I juggled during my tenure at that big construction company I mentioned above.

But for now, I'm very busy building ryer.io, a fractional tech leadership firm, working on I.Liv, raising kids, fixing my home, and slowly going off-grid.

I.Liv Performance Inc. (2022 - Present)

At I.Liv, I'm the lead developer. I'm the only developer, actually. It didn't start out that way, though. It started with two others, both of whom had substantially more experience than me, which I liked. Eventually, they all got caught up in more lucrative endeavors, and I remained to keep things moving forward. I.Liv. is an app supporting women (actually anyone, really) in achieving professional goals while maintaining personal balance. It implements agile methodologies into real life and does so via a cohort-based coaching program offered by experienced women.

  • AWS for deployments with VPC and advanced security configurations
  • Azure DevOps for task management and CI/CD pipelines
  • Jest and Maestro for unit, integration, and E2E testing

Whippersnapps Digital Inc. (2020 - 2022)

I led the tech and faced customers on this one. We created P.O. Pro and I designed and built the apps and server from scratch. I probably shouldn't have done all the work myself, but when you're attempting to cultivate deep insights, you need to go right down to the core. P.O. Pro is a SaaS and mobile app combo for construction companies. It reduces friction, miscommunication, and silly errors when passing purchase order info around from site to office to vendor. It taught me about security, payments, permissions, complex DB queries, system optimization, and deployment strategies. I also held many customer conversations during this time. I was speaking with domain experts in several different industries, trying to understand product viability and assess risks even though I wasn't the domain expert. It turned out to be quite a challenge, but I learned a lot and still refer to my notes from these conversations to this day. I had to really stretch my mind, and that's good.

Ultimately, my partner and I decided to move on. His company was growing very quickly and he had to make some hard decisions about what he could support.

Plan Group Inc. (2017 - 2020)

When I took this job, I was impressed at the company's desire to transform themselves digitally. I explicitly applied for this reason. I'm passionate about this. They immediately got me started working on the operations team where I took on the project of continuing to develop an Excel spreadsheet they were trying to implement as software across their sites. I began learning visual basic so I could really tune this sheet in, and eventually ended up with a tool that could manage crew rosters, task lists, accounting codes and analysis in a way that was integrated and responsive. You could also set it up with a basic input template and it would do all the other magic for you. It was definitely too much for what a "spreadsheet" should be able to do. It had far too many hidden sheets. It should have been centrally hosted. Having to implement "pseudo-interfaces" in a language that never supported interfaces probably meant it had outgrown its use-case. All that aside: it was a spreadsheet that you can send via email, and that's what was familiar with site personnel, and honestly, in construction, that did justify the means.

I had a wonderful time teaching people the math behind the franken-sheet and rolling it out to several dozen projects of all sizes all across Canada. It really made me dive into the nuances of labour-driven KPIs on construction projects and all the interesting assumptions that we tend to make when determining what KPIs to measure success with. It was a stressful job, though, and with kids and a very long commute, I decided it was best to find something that fit my situation a little better.

The Enabled Company Inc. (2017 - 2021)

Two friends and I started and maintained an e-commerce company called The Enabled Company Inc. It was in the menstrual product space and it reached about 60k per year in revenue. Managing its finances and operations, I learned the ins and outs of running a business. Together, my partners and I designed and sourced raw materials for 13 physical products which we sold primarily on Amazon.ca. We registered trademarks, engaged with local and global suppliers, manufacturers, and other agencies to successfully coordinate the production and delivery of our product to a whole bunch of happy customers! Our best-selling product had 250 reviews with an average of 4.6 stars.

Wanna know what killed the company?

Lack of capital. We didn't have enough to purchase and keep sufficient quantities of our product on hand for weathering major economic storms. One hit us and we lost significant-enough traction for other sellers to move in and out-compete. Amazon is a wild-west, and it's also a great business-learning experience.

  • I'm a multi-year volunteer technical consultant for the Stirling Musical Instrument Lending Library (Stirling MILL)
  • I've built a few small projects with Vue, Ionic
  • I've done work in production apps with Java, Kotlin, Objective-C, Swift (for native modules in the React Native apps I've built)
  • I've used State managers: Redux, Mobx, Jotai, Cache-syncs (React Query and custom implementations for syncing images across multiple devices in I.Liv.)
  • I've used AWS in various ways (Cognito, DynamoDB, EB, EC2, Route 53)
  • Automation. Scripts are good. Whether its bash or perl, scripts are handy.

  • I play music and I'm nearly always singing or tapping.
  • I used to commute 350km per day in an electric vehicle. No range anxiety, but don't commute that much.

  • I started an e-commerce business and found enough success to feel confident in entrepreneurial endeavors.

  • I manage mild depression and anxiety with a strong emotional toolkit from these experiences.
  • I'm a code mentor at the NASA Space Apps Challenge and passionate about humanity's growth into space. I volunteer for space-related projects where I can.

  • I probably sound like a kid, but I'm in my mid-thirties.
