Chip-8 Emulator

Just a CHIP-8 Emulator! Built with Java & Swing, project undertaken to learn about system emulation.

Motivation

Since I found out about system emulation, I have been super fascinated with it. I'm building this CHIP-8 emulator to get started since the EmuDev community tends to suggest it for first-timers. My goal is to build a GB emulator, so this project is a sort of stepping stone.

Compatible Roms

All roms in the roms folder are fully compatible with this emulator. I didn't implement any CHIP-48 opcodes, so roms from popular archives like this one are incompatible. It should be noted that this project is NOT an implementation of the CHIP-48, so this incompatibility is not indicative of partial completion.

Testing

Since most of the application is GUI, unit tests have only been written for the CPU. There are a number of test roms to facilitate debugging, so the unit tests weren't super rigorous; the test roms are included in the roms folder.

Installation

Prequisites

Make sure that JDK 8, JRE 8, and Maven are installed:

sudo apt install openjdk-8-jdk openjdk-8-jre maven

Compiling and Running

then clone the directory and cd into the root of it

git clone https://github.com/Svaught598/Chip8Emulator Chip8 cd ./Chip8

Compile the code with Maven and use java to run it:

mvn clean package java -cp ./target/Chip8Emulator-1.0.jar emulator.Main

Install as above, mess with the code, and submit a pull request!
