NIFSTD Style guide

  1. Sentence case: First letter of first word capitalized. Only proper names thereafter. This differs from the recommendation of OBO but it seems more natural to me.

  2. Cell vs neuron: Prefer that we use "neuron" in preferred label, e.g., Purkinje neuron rather than Purkinje cell. However cell variant should be added as a synonym.

  3. Make sure that subclasses of concepts contain the parent class label, e.g., Spiking behavior > Fast spiking behavior, rather than "Fast". However, as names of neuron classes will be automatically generated from phenotypes, "Fast" may be used as a display label.

  4. Arabic numerals, e.g., layer 2 vs layer II, although Roman numerals should be listed as synonyms
