Image 2.0 Quick Start Guide - X-Tec

Introduction

Image v2.0 was a project started in 1991 by New Image Software, Inc. as an upgrade to the popular Image vl.2a. The project was never fully completed but by 1994 it was far enough along to allow Alpha-Test/Development boards to run copies of it on dial-up, land line modems.

I received a copy of Image 2.0 in the summer of 2016 from the sysop of one of the Alpha-Test boards as a copy of his June, 1995 backup disks.

Preparation

Image 2.0 follows the same "Image Drive" assignments as Image l.2:

  1. System drive: s.*, n.* files
  2. Email drive: m.*, nm.* files
  3. Etcetera drive: e.* files
  4. Directory drive: d.* files
  5. Program drive: +*, ++ *, scn., im.*, i.* files
  6. User drive: u.* files

Boot drive: Image will boot from any device/drive but must contain the following files: boot 2.0, im, ml 2.0, image 2.0, and ml.rs232.

Note 1: This .d81 file contains 282 individual files. While it‘s possible to run Image 2.0 from a single 1581 drive, as Image creates new files, you will soon hit the 298 directory entry limit for 1581 drives. Keep that in mind as you copy these to their appropriate Image drives.

Note 2: If your plus drive is something other than your boot drive, copy im and image to your plus file drive. This is needed for Image 2.0 to handle certain error conditions.

  1. Use fcopy+ or your favorite copy program for copying files to their Image drives. I recommend using copy-all.64l by Jim Butterfield for copying the two REL files.
  2. Edit the +/lo.on by adding at the end of line 4074 :ll%=40 (lower case LL)
  3. The file +/modem is customized for use with the C64NET WIFI Modem at 2400 baud on port 6407. Line 4006 includes as part of the initialization string, s41=1a6407 which with the C64NET modem sets the standby listening port to answer on the first ring on port 6407. You may need to edit line 4006 to suit your modem device.

Installation

  1. Type load"boot 2.0",x,1 (x=device # of our boot drive)
  2. When prompted to select between Configure a New Board or Convert From l.2/1.2a, enter l to configure a new board.
  3. Part I: Sysop Information: Enter the information asked for.
  4. Part II: Device, Drive Configuration Clock setting: - Options l and 2 have been tested and work. If you want Image to set the clock from your CMD device, select 2 now. It will be difficult to change it later. Continue with setting your device and drive settings for your Image drive assignments.
  5. Part III: BBS Information: Enter the customized information asked for pertaining to YOUR BBS.

At this point, Image will create several files needed for its own operation. When finished, Image will self-boot to the call waiting screen.

Configuration

  1. At the System Idle screen, hit the l key to set the time if not already set by the CMD boot device. Image will perform AutoMaintenance and return to the System Idle screen.
  2. Press f7 to log on, and select I to use Instant Logon mode.
  3. Enter your password.
  4. Select your timezone (7=EST, 6=CST, 5≒MST, 4=PST)
  5. Enter the number of lines per screen (Suggest 23)

NOTE: Use the f5 (move highlight left), f7, and f8 keys to raise your time remaining, otherwise it’s likely you will run out of time before you finish items 7 through whatever and have to start over after logging back in.

  1. At the main prompt, enter ED and at the User Edit prompt enter l (not your handle) then enter 23 and set your sysop permission flags as needed. (0’s for items 17 through 20 mean unlimited.) Exit the editor by hitting Return and answer Yes to save changes.

  2. At the main prompt, enter EP to Edit your Parameters. Select Parameters Set your Computer Type and any other Terminal Parameters you want. Set Cursor Menu Mode On. Hit Return to exit.

  3. At the main prompt, enter IM - You will be taken to the Image BBS Configuration Editor.

  4. Enter E for Access Groups and set up at least the Group 9 Flags. Type Return to exit, saving changes. You will be returned to the Configuration Editor.

  5. Enter I for Misc. Features. At minimum, you will need to set the time zone and the System ID. When finished, enter M to return to the main menu, then N to quit.

  6. Type O to log off. Answer Yes to the option to Update User File. When you are back to the Idle screen, shut down and reboot Image.

  7. After rebooting, log back on in local mode. If the board asks you for your time zone and lines per screen again, enter them but when you get ready to log off; use the O command and answer Yes to the option to Update User File.

  8. Enter IM to go to the Configuration Editor and finish configuring your board.

From here, you're on your own. Explore and become familiar with the new features. Much has changed since Image l.2 and the best way to learn is to experiment. You’ll probably be confused and make mistakes along the way but the learning experience is necessary for a system that has no operating instructions.
