I'm not going to perform work, but I would like to keep track of the above issue for future reference. In general, the official node images will add between 40-80MB of size to our own images. I like how small they are. Plus when we upgraded to the newer version of node, we brought in updated versions of alpine anyways. I don't think the effort needed for this story is worth performing any work. Pending the outcome of the above issue may change this opinion. But for the time being, I'm liking mhart's image over the official nodejs image.
