n00b question here. Google have an Api called 'Nearby Search (New)'

Is this supported by the library, or only the older version of the Nearby search Api?

Currently, only the older version of places search.
I will find some time to implement the newer api's.

I know it's likely not a trivial migration, but would be great to get a branch going with a head start on it that maybe we could contribute in peace-meal to

As discussed elsewhere, the older Places API is on a deprecation path. It will enter "legacy" state in March 1, 2025.
