Is there a replacement for Vue CLI's conditional "require"?

In the Vue CLI you can conditionally import a file using require if you specify dev mode. I'm wondering if there is any kind of support for this in Vite? I should note that I'm using Typescript and therefore I would be importing a ts file, not a js file. If I convert the following into an import statement within an async function, I just get an empty module object and not the expected default export from the file.

How it's done with Vue CLI

import App from './App.vue'

Try import.meta.env.PROD and await import('./mocks/browser')
