Step by Step to Create First Page with Background?

First off thank you for all the work on this! I'm excited to try and use it.

I can't get it to work though. No errors. Just 'how do I do a simple first page with background?"

Steps I've done already from Admin Portal:
-added theme
-activated theme
-cleared cache
-added gallery page
-added default page.

Nothing. Just shows default page?
