For context, prior to the instagram desktop highlights update that occurred within the last month, instantgram would successfully open any image and video, being viewed in a highlight, into a new tab. After this change to profile highlights, images can no longer be opened, regardless of what profile/highlight is being viewed; videos will still open in a new tab.
I've also noticed another issue where, depending on the number of photos in a given post, certain images won't open in a new tab. One example of this is a post that has 10 photos; only image 1, 4, 5, 9, and 10 will open in a new tab. For posts that include both photos and videos, trying to open a photo in a new tab before or after a video will either open the video that's next in the slide or skip to the next photo on the slide that's currently not in view (respectively).
Hope this description helps. Let me know if you need me to clarify anything else.
