how can I use group by and get other data from the entry?

I want to group by a foreign key and select the last updated. it should check after it if the creation date is smaller than a value. How can I do that?

SELECT  reference, time::max(updated) FROM progress WHERE user = user:testuser GROUP BY reference WHERE created < ...;

Could you provide some surlql to create a minimal example of your schema and some test rows?

In the meantime, does this give you the result you need?

SELECT * FROM (SELECT  reference, time::max(updated), created FROM progress WHERE user = user:testuser GROUP BY reference) WHERE created < ...;

this doesn't work because of group by:
Parse error: Found 'created' in SELECT clause at line 1 column 130, but field is not an aggregate function, and is not present in GROUP BY expression
