This is something interesting that may also interest you; a zoomable/multi-level hexagon grid:

I want to visualize it, but at resolution 15 the ammount of hexagons is overwelming, perhaps this is where ray-tracing can come in handy.

I wonder if H3 library can be integrated with your renderer, so that these H3 grids can be rendered... (?)
