Hey there! 😄 My name is Brennan, I'm a 26-year-old Queer Métis JAMstack developer and content strategist from Winnipeg, Manitoba and currently reside in Calgary, Alberta. I have completed both the Full-Stack Developer Program at InceptionU and the Growth Marketing Bootcamp at OnRamp.

I have been a developer on GitHub for several years now, and I'm most interested in supporting the IndieWeb. I do this primarily by creating free, open-source themes for the static-site generator Jekyll:

  • 🗃️ Enjoyment Work: A Digital Garden: Capturing my daily thoughts and progress, as well as curated ideas with unique synthesis—a personal zettelkasten. Built on Simply Jekyll by Raghuveer S.
  • 🚰 Watery: A minimalist, bare-bones theme for Jekyll only using the Water.css framework while still following the best practices for accessibility and search-engine optimization.
  • 📔 Purelog: A responsive sidebar Jekyll theme using the Pure.css framework, designed for writers and bloggers of all kinds.
  • 🎏 Classic Spirits: A classic sidebar Jekyll theme for old-school blogging, created with the Bulma framework. Built on Soot Spirits by Abhishek Nagekar.

I have always been passionate about creating and maintaining free and open-source software (FOSS) projects that empower individuals to own their digital identities and connect with each other in meaningful ways; however, my time and resources are limited, and I struggle to balance my passion for FOSS with my day-to-day responsibilities and income-generating work.

Getting sponsorship on GitHub would provide me with the financial stability and freedom to focus more time and energy on my FOSS projects for the benefit of the IndieWeb community. Here are some of the reasons why I believe sponsorship would have a positive impact:

  1. More time to develop and maintain projects: With sponsorship, I would be able to reduce the amount of time I spend on other paid work, freeing up more time to work on my FOSS projects. This would allow me to make quicker progress, fix bugs faster, and release new features more frequently.
  2. Better resources: With more financial resources, I would be able to invest in better tools and equipment, which would allow me to work more efficiently and effectively.
  3. Increased collaboration: With more time and resources, I would be able to collaborate more closely with other contributors to the IndieWeb community, sharing knowledge and ideas, and working together to create better solutions for the community.
  4. Improved user-experience: By devoting more time to my FOSS projects, I would be able to create a better user experience and accessibility for the community, making it easier for people to use and benefit from the tools and software I create.

Overall, getting sponsorship on GitHub would provide me with the support I need to make a greater impact on the IndieWeb community, empowering individuals to own and control their digital lives. By working together, we can make the web a more open and connected place for everyone.

I would also love to volunteer my time to contributing to open-source projects! I love creating and tinkering with small, static websites and projects. I'm a big proponent of putting an emphasis on accessibility and the A11y project in web development.

I'm always looking to work with people that are hopeless idealists like me, as well as who are interested in creating and working on cool, interesting, and meaningful projects! Shoot me an e-mail if that sounds like your cup of tea.

@brennanbrown

If I reached this goal, it would allow me to dedicate myself full-time to free and open-source software and IndieWeb projects, with a focus on contributing to the greater good of the community, In addition, this would provide me with a sense of financial security, freeing me from the need to balance my passion for FOSS with other paid work. I would focus my time and energy on developing and maintaining projects, improving the user experience, and collaborating with other contributors to the community. I could invest in better tools and equipment, attend conferences and workshops to share my knowledge, or even mentor new contributors to the community.
