Completely Redesigned Version of M³ Available For Testing!

We are excited to announce that after quite a bit of development, a completely redesigned version of Meeting Media Manager (M³) is now available for testing!

This new version introduces significant improvements, including greatly simplified media management. We have eliminated the complex processes of the past, which included media prefixes, remembering what options to click and in what order, and so on. All this has been replaced with an intuitive drag-and-drop interface that will help to streamline the tasks related to being audio-video attendant.

Your feedback will be invaluable in ensuring that any issues are ironed out, that missing features are added, and that the redesigned version functions as intended. Once we confirm its stability and performance, the new version will be released here for all users.

Please keep in mind that our goal for this redesign was twofold:

1. make the app as simple as possible to use, and
2. include all features needed to play and manage media for meetings.

For this reason, some features were intentionally left out for now. If, in the future, certain features are requested by enough of you to show that they would indeed be useful and practical for many, then thought will be put into adding them.

Please keep in mind, this is an early release. Please don't use this for live meetings unless you know what you're doing and have a backup plan at the ready.

First of all, congratulations on the excellent work on this new version. I really liked the simplification of the features, however, it is inevitable not to compare with the current version X beta version available for testing.

Here are some observations concerning the tests carried out:

1. Feature: Excellent, the program is already working fine.

2. Camera / Scenes: I didn’t find it practical to switch scenes with pop-up. Suggestion: Keep the current distribution or change the scenes to the left sidebar. I did not find it practical to show the scene MEDIA, however, it is important to keep the feature of inserting an image to replace the text of the same year has in the current version and we use this year in the celebration a new image that was displayed during the annual celebration of the death of Christ.

3. Webdav: I haven’t found this feature, I use it every week and I know several brothers who use this feature to send the additional media. Will there be any feature that allows you to set up Koofr, or OneDrive, or Google Drive etc? (Tip: Keep at least one of these features to send other media to the kingdom hall)

4. Hide image and video viewing only in zoom: The suggestion is to keep the current feature, that is, when pausing the media, stops viewing the image in zoom and remains on stage on the TV kingdom hall, is much more practical and easy to use.

5. Separation of the session: I missed the separation of the session from the meetings similar to JWL, and in the current version already has this option, even using colors next to it, it gets a little confusing everything together. Tip: Keep the division per session.

6. Add media: Only the drag and drop option, will make it difficult, especially for those who do not have so much ability to use this feature (older siblings, laptop without mouse, etc.).

7. Recurring Media: We use the text of the year every meeting and use a chronometer every meeting. Is it possible to keep this feature?

8. Play video first: We use a 2-minute timer before meetings. I would like to ask you to keep setting to start the first video before the meeting time. I know this function is optional, but we’ve adapted and it’s used a lot here. We use a timer (2 or 5 minutes) to indicate that the meeting will start. Is it possible to keep this option to configure and play the first video?

Here's a point-by-point reply. 😄

2. I'll think about this some more. The scene picker popup could no doubt be refactored to be more useful.
3. This is not something I plan to implement for the foreseeable future.
   As a workaround, I suggest setting up a cloud sync solution (such as OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.) and using that to send media to the KH PC. Once the designated AV operator arrives at the KH and logs in, they could simply take all the files from the cloud sync folder and drop them into the current day in M³.
   This solution will allow for all to enjoy using M³, not only power users.
4. This was fixed in v24.6.2.
5. This was implemented in v24.6.2.
6. A "browse" button was added in v24.6.2.
7. In line with sfl and S-141, this will not be implemented.

3. About item 3, the suggestion and keep the option to change the installation location (folder) so that we have the option to specify the Google Drive folder / OneDrive / Dropbox / Koofr etc. I know brothers who use this way, and the media synchronizes perfectly.

In this refactor, I have completely changed the way that M³ stores media. It now works similar to JWL, in that no path needs to be configured by the user; everything "just works" out of the box.

For this reason, those who would like to make use of a cloud sharing solution like Dropbox can use the workaround that I mentioned previously: add files as needed to the cloud share from home. After arriving at the KH, the AV operator can simply drag and drop the synced files from the cloud folder, into the M³ window. This is quite a simple solution.

As for the "special" option, I could include it as an option in the advanced section of the settings.

The idea with this refactor is to make M³ as simple and "plug-and-play" as possible. This is why the setup wizard was added, even further simplifying the onboarding process for new users.

My goal is to have an app that anyone can use. Too often, I've witnessed users confused by the unintuitive interface of the previous version. This new version has less menus, less clicking, and no more complicated processes. Just open M³, and press play.

Want to reorder media? Just drag it to where you'd like; no more "sorting prefixes". Want to add images from a JWPUB file? Just drop it in and you're on your way. Everything just works.

Seems like I can't import any data, neither from jw.org nor even local. Reinstall, computer or app restart, changing the media/app/fallback language won't help.

I was thinking of someone who wants to use JWL for normal media and M³ for other/custom media. At this point though, I'm honestly not sure if this a realistic scenario. What do you think?

Hmm, seems like both M³ and JW Library can work with both normal and custom media. Personally I can't see a real world scenario where JWL will be used only for normal media, while M³ only for custom media for example.

The only "sometimes-type" cases I can come up with are:

1. Viewing PDFs (even though I'm pretty sure that most will simply drag-and-drop a PDF viewer/browser to the second monitor just because they're used to doing so. M³ requires some preparation for sure).
2. Some rare cases when the user needs to zoom in on an image, and knows that in advance.
3. Emergency video playback. For instance, a new Governing Body update that needs to be played right now (and no one was ready). In this case, JW Library can simply stream the video, while M³ must first fully download it to then play.

Is there anything else?

In any case, right now to me it sounds more like "hmm, I can't make a choice" situation rather than a case where two apps will be used simultaneously. I'm not sure if that won't cause additional confusion. What's are your thoughts?

I don't disagree with your thinking; perhaps I'll remove that wizard step and setting item.
Instead, I could just have a setting under the advanced section to disable meeting media fetching completely. Those that need it for some reason could enable it there, but the rest of users would never even know that feature exists.

As for your numbered points:

1. PDF viewing is one of those edge cases I'd definitely like to be ready for. I've used PDFs myself on a number of occasions. I'd looked for the user to be able to just drop the PDF in and show it. For now that doesn't work unfortunately, but hopefully that will change soon.

Initial version of this in 37a2ab0. The phrasing will have to be refined, but I think having it at the very end of the advanced settings will prevent accidentally enabling it.

Yes, if that's possible. In the "Import from jw.org" we can add the Stream now and Download buttons to be able to quickly do any of those actions.

First version of this in 00d0120. Could maybe be polished, but it works and it's seamless. If a video hasn't finished downloading and a user clicks on play, it streams. If it's downloaded, it's plays from the local file.

For now, yes. Depending on how things go, I think I'll either:

• push one last update to the current version of M³ with a warning notification that on X date, a new version will be released and replace the existing app, and outline the changes, or
• simply stop updating the old version, and show a warning notification indicating that if the user wants a supported version with updates, to download the latest version

In either case, much more testing needs to be done before rolling the new version out, especially the Linux and macOS versions. I want a stable and bulletproof app.

The new version is fantastic.
For me, and other brothers I know, the biggest challenge will be to adapt the lack of the WebDAV feature, because it makes it much easier. Even with the other options, nothing compares to the current feature.

[SUGGESTION]
The left sidebar, when it slides, ends up being less open items, if possible, the ideal would be to slide and adjust the main screen or the sidebar if fixed.

Currently the bar hides the information through the main screen, and this ends up being a bit confusing.

@sircharlo I think it would be great to add "Download all the song audios" and "Download all the song videos" check boxes at the end of the onboarding. This will allow to immediately start the download process(es) once user arrives to the home page.

It adds much to the user experience, excluding the anxiety of having no "last minute" song video played because of slow internet connection. Just one example. I remember you have the music-related setting in the current M³ version, but having the video-related option will be so much useful too!

Plus, @sircharlo if we're talking about OBS, is it possible to improve the UX and behavior predictability by forcing switching back to the default speaker view after manually switching OBS scenes WHILE presenting image?

The current stable M³ behaviour is:

1. I'm presenting a media
2. I switch the scene in OBS to an alternative layout.
3. After the media turned off, OBS won't switch back to the standard speaker scene. It rather keeps the last alternative scene, but turns the image off.

So my suggestion is something like: IF stop button clicked = turn on default speaker OBS scene (no matter what's been selected before). From my testing and asking different brothers, that's an expected behaviour after turning off an image.

What do you think?

The scene of OBS Studio for media, is appearing in the list of clippings of the camera scenes of OBS Studio, is it possible to leave this option equal to the current M3 (the MEDIA scene is hidden in the list of presets (camera)?

I feel it's better to let the AV operator have the possibility of switching if really needed; however, I have added a separator in my latest commit to make the distinction abundantly clear.

From what I can see so far, it basically warns user "If you turn off the parent setting, this one will be turned off as well". Right? Or have you intended anything else?

Honestly that's a placeholder more than anything. They're settings that depend on another, like you said. I also hated how in the Advanced settings section, it was a potpourri of randomness and it was hard to differentiate which setting related to what.

That's kind of by design. If it's a meeting day and you browse to that day's media (and the meeting hasn't started yet) there's no reason for the background music not to play (that I can think of anyway)

Good, tested, if you meeting started, based on the time you put on the settings, it does not start the music. Perfect!

That happens under the hood automatically. Files such as videos and JWPUB files get downloaded whenever a new version is published.

Awesome!!! Will it be possible to zoom in as if it were a normal browser? We did not benefit from that option because the letters look small on the screens.

Hello brothers! I would like to suggest two small changes that, if implemented, would be quite useful.

(1) As you can see in the image 1 below, when selecting the language for the app and media, Brazilian Portuguese appears as "Portuguese," while European Portuguese is correctly labeled as "Portuguese (Portugal)." This causes confusion for new users of the M3 app who may not be aware of this issue, as typing "Portuguese" will automatically select Brazilian Portuguese, effectively hiding the option for European Portuguese (as seen in image 2). I apologize if I'm being unclear in any way.

Moving on to the main point, my suggestion would be:
Rename the language to "Portuguese (Brazil)" (instead of just "Portuguese") and keep "Portuguese (Portugal)" as it is.

(2) During the weekend meeting of October 26-27, there is an image, as shown below, that accompanies a chart in The Watchtower magazine. This image is to be displayed in paragraph 13. However, it currently appears before the image for paragraph 5 on the list.

My suggestion would be: If possible, the chart's image should be displayed in the list between the images for paragraph 5 and paragraph 15. This is a common issue with chart images.

But I believe that if it is possible to unify the first and second configuration screen, already would solve, the user changes to the language of their preference for the interface language and the next screen will be the Profile Type.

I wish! The database files used in JWL only provide the identifier of the first paragraph where an image will be used, but not the last paragraph (or even better: an array of paragraphs). There's not much I can do to infer this info for now, unfortunately.

Correct; this repo's version should not be installed for regular use at the KH. The new version will be released in the original repo and the old version should auto-update to the new version seamlessly.

Hey @sircharlo, did you consider the points in this discussion before opting for localStorage vs. file storage? For most storage, it won't matter, but it might be an issue for the congregation settings.

It's also worth noting that localStorage and indexedDb data can be lost if a user installs an older version of your app which uses an older version of Electron.

I think this also applies when updating to a newer (major) version of Electron (haven't tested this).

I'm not sure that's true, given the next part of the comment:

Chromium only caters for upgrades to the underlying levelDb store. If you run a previous version of Electron, it can fail to read the levelDb store and deletes it to start again from scratch!

This means that Chromium does 'cater for upgrades' of LevelDB stores as needed from previous versions.

@sircharlo I was testing the automatic congregation search feature, and regarding the issue of some congregations not showing the language, what would PTG be? At first I thought it was Portuguese T-T.

Wouldn't it be better to leave it blank when you don't have the language?

About the download error, I believe that is why a media will still be produced and updated the file to download, so, you will know if it has the ability to limit this error warning only be shown if the media is absent in the current week or at most the following week?

What's changed:

• only show that red banner if the meeting in question is 7 days or less from now (should alert far enough in advance without being annoying)
• fix a problem I discovered with the download-error icon not showing up properly
• make the background of the download button red only when the app/computer is offline

When the notice regarding the CO appears, it would be possible to click on the notice and the M3 open the tab Congregation Meetings and flash the option where the date of the visit should be informed in Next planned visit of the circuit...?
Or have some options: inform now, postpone for a week or postpone for a month. For example, sometimes the visit has just occurred, and the date of the next visit is not yet known.

The notification only shows up if no CO visit date is configured, or if the configured date is about 3 months in the past. By that time, the next date is usually known.

Yeah, I had set it up like that mostly for testing. I just pushed a change that will change that to start the music only if the meeting is in less than 2 hours, which should cover most cases.
