Theming

I wanted to formalize a discussion around Evergreen’s theming capabilities, since a number of issues have cropped up over the last few months (and years, to be honest) around how to use it, what it can and can’t do, and what people want it to do.

Some examples include:

• Documentation (In Theming documentation, specify which components are unable to have custom appearances and sizes #1594, Difficulty Modifying Components #1578 (comment), Popover Themeing / Styling (+ Support for tailwind?) #1299)
  • Lack of documentation around which components and which parts of each component can be themed
• Extensibility (Overriding default button colors #1106 (reply in thread), How can I create my own theme? #1544)
  • Design tokens, selectors, etc
• Typing (Theme typing discrepencies.  #1465 (comment))
  • There’s a big disconnect between the actual theme values and the component types, which leaves people guessing

What design systems have you used that have really robust, easy-to-use, well-documented theming systems?
