rbenv fails to switch versions

I installed rbenv, then installed ruby version 2.7.5. My project's .ruby-versionfile reads 2.7.5. The only entry in the ~/.rbenv/versions folder is 2.7.5. I run rbenv local 2.7.5, with no errors. But running ruby --version, I get the following output.

☁  playground  rbenv local 2.7.5
☁  playground  ruby --version
ruby 2.6.8p205 (2021-07-07 revision 67951) [universal.arm64e-darwin21]
☁  playground

Is this a problem with rbenv on M1 Macs? Why doesn't the version update work?

The problem was that the doc failed to mention two important steps.

1. Run the command rbenv init
2. Close and restart the terminal
   As mentioned in this SO post
