On Pop!_OS 20.04 LTS, the latest linux-firmware update (from version 1.201.1+system76~1637764303~20.04~07a5d65 to version 20220314.gitcd01f857-0ubuntu2+system76~1648069426~20.04~6a8536b) does not install with a regular apt upgrade (which means it also doesn't install via the Pop!_Shop); it requires a full-upgrade/dist-upgrade.

I'm not sure why, as apt seems to recognize the new version number as higher, and it's not trying to upgrade/downgrade anything else.

On a fresh install of 20.04 as of this morning this is still an issue.

Whatever the issue is, I'm not sure how to fix it, but Pop!_Shop does appear to be able to upgrade

Testing today, confirmed the Pop!_Shop is now able to install this update for some reason, even though apt upgrade still doesn't. Tested the following scenarios:

  • Installing all updates at once from a fresh install of the latest NVIDIA iso (38)
  • Installing all other updates via apt upgrade, then just the linux-firmware update via the Pop!_Shop
