Around npm 4~5 I made my switch into pnpm which eased a lot of issues related to the node_modules directory mainly size, and access to undeclared modules in the package.json file as well as some speed improvements in some aspects.
My main pain point when using pnpm (that arises from npm/yarn behavior) is that they by default go full flat modules and some library authors use these undeclared dependencies.
