Unable to install: "fatal: the remote end hung up unexpectedly"

I'm a newbie to Homebrew, failing to install for the very first time on a new MacBook that meets macOS Requirements:
-- 64-bit Intel CPU
-- macOS Big Sur 11.1
-- Xcode Command Line Tools (CLT) installed
-- shell for installation (zsh)

I followed instructions at https://docs.brew.sh/Installation yet the install fails with error
"Error: Fetching /usr/local/Homebrew/Library/Taps/homebrew/homebrew-core failed!"

Can anyone help me, please?

Do you already have a /usr/local/Homebrew/Library/Taps/homebrew/homebrew-core directory? If so, can you paste the contents of the file /usr/local/Homebrew/Library/Taps/homebrew/homebrew-core/.git/config? I don't have a specific solution in mind I'm just curious if that will help diagnose.

How about the output of brew update --force --verbose? Not sure that will give any more helpful information but it's worth a try I think.

Some other things you could try: run brew update-reset

Manually clone the homebrew/core repo by running the following:

cd $(brew --repo homebrew/core)
git clone https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-core.git .

My guess is that those won't work either, though. You could try increasing the http.postBuffer setting in your git config per this link (thanks Shaun for suggesting that)

I was having an issue with brew installation where the core would fail to install (tried installing multiple times with the standard installation curl). I ran brew --version and saw (no git repository) at the core folder.

Running brew update-reset fixed my installation issue. Thanks!

We've discussed this issue internally a little bit. There doesn't seem to be anything that we can do on our end. There have been no changes to the code involved here recently, and it's not an issue that's reproducible by the maintainers.

It seems there are two options for what could be happening:

1. It's an issue with your internet connection
2. It's an issue with GitHub

If it's the first, that's something you'll need to figure out. You can probably test this by attempting to install Homebrew while on a different network.

If that doesn't seem to work, it's likely an issue on GitHub's end. There isn't much we can do to help here. The best thing you can do is open a support ticket with them. If more people are experiencing this issue, they should also open tickets. That's the best way to draw their attention to the issue. They will hopefully be able to help more than we can.

Thanks for your help Rylan, understood. I am certain that it's not my internet connection, as it's 200Mb broadband over fibre network. Never had a problem downloading anything else before now. Will try GitHub.

I had the same issue with cloning homebrew-core over https (Big Sur 11.0.1, Little Snitch - although Little Snitch network filter was disabled) ~ 30 secondish remote disconnects. Cloning over ssh works and forcing GitHub URLs over SSH fixed the issue (from Homebrew/legacy-homebrew#34363 (comment)), add the following to ~/.gitconfig:

    insteadOf = "https://github.com/"

Thanks @euoia . This one seemed to work for me. I tried dozens of different values for postBuffer and compression within my gitconfig and this one seemed to do the trick.

For others, I was attempting to install Homebrew on a Mac Mini M1 running Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 using the following command:

$ /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"

It used to run and always fail with the error message that this issue pertains, but following adding the suggested config to the global .gitconfig file, Homebrew was successfully installed. Finally! 😄

It's been confirmed that this is a bug in BigSur and Apple is fixing in BigSur 11.3 by the looks of it. Any product like antivirus etc which taps network traffic will be affected and cause this issue.

OK, I'm not 100% if this applies to all people on this discussion. My issue turned out to be DNS related, I set my network config to Google's public 8.8.8.8 DNS. I can now install Homebrew via terminal with no issues. Was very simple in the end, hope this helps someone.

I've just been wresting with this same problem and noticed that somebody else mentioned also being a Virgin Media Customer. I found that turning off the Web Safe features meant that I could install without any problem. I've sent Virgin a message explaining this. I also had to follow the advice about removing the Brew folders from /usr/local as the aborted install attempts had already created these.

I'm with Virgin Media UK and had the same problem today. Disabling Virgin's Web Safe features worked for me as well. In particular it was the Child Safe setting that needed disabling rather than Virus Safe. For reference I'm running macOS Catalina 10.15.7 and had already tried increasing the postBuffer size as was previously mentioned.

It's the core tap (a.k.a. the main package repository) whose setup fails midway, but since you got that far, the Homebrew software repository should already be in place, so brew is just not in your PATH yet. That's easily fixed with:

# ...else on an Intel Mac...
eval "$(/usr/local/bin/brew shellenv)"

The uninstall worked for me. I had accidentally attempted the install before I had added my new ssh-key to GitHub.

The uninstall command, and then removing the directories that command says "you might want to remove" and then running the install again fixed me up.

A summary of all the tricks I added to get this to work:

1. Make sure you're on the latest version of Mac OS
2. Try removing your ISP Child and Web Safe Settings
3. Change DNS Settings to something like Google
4. Ensure you are using the Bash Shell
5. Try this if you have an unresolved partial install of brew: rm -fr $(brew --repo homebrew/core) & brew tap homebrew/core
6. Make sure it's all properly uninstalled before trying again: /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/uninstall.sh)"

This has wasted 3 hours of my day.... All so I can use a little app to burn a ISO. FFS!

I think I've figured it out! It appears to be a problem with Macs doing large downloads over 5GHz wifi bands. My home router is running 5GHz and would not work, but when I switched to my mobile hotspot which runs 2.4GHz the Homebrew installation was fast and painless.

For reference, I'm using a MacBook Air with Apple M1 chip. I would be curious to see if others who have this issue are using the same hardware, and if this is unique to M1 or if it affects Intel Macs as well. Either way, looks like this will be an issue for all developers until Apple pushes a fix out.

I have had this problem since i bought this MacBook in December, i tried many different ways but didn't work. However, after months of try i found a solution for my self.

I tried partial install yet that didn't work either.

It all boiled down to my own network issue, my internet was bottlenecking the install. I'm with virgin media in the UK.

I fixed the install problem by deleting all the failed installs of Homebrew, removing the directories and using a VPN (I used ExpressVPN) to install. This fixed my problem!

In my case, the problem was that I have a slow internet connection and my Mac went to sleep during the download. My solution was to go into the Energy Saver system preferences and set "Turn display off after" to Never. I also checked "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off." The next installation attempt succeeded.

Several times the MacBook went to sleep. Several times I interrupted the process by myself because I thought it was too long to be normal. Once I was looking for a solution after started the next attempt to install brew. I was reading a lot. At some moment I heard a sound notification - it was a notification about successful installation:

I experienced the same issue as the original post... and managed to fix on my M1

Steps:

1. installed Rosetta (apparently some libs still live in Rosetta)
2. Installed Xcode (well made sure the install completed)
3. deleted the previously installed brew folder/s (/opt/homebrew)
4. reinstall brew

Hope this helps someone else :)

had the same issue as OP and just did sudo rm -rf /usr/local/Homebrew and pasted the install line from the homepage and solved it

To me, it was a pure internet connection issue. Did again when the connection was more stable, worked!

This worked for me, after nothing else did.

For my case, I found I cannot ping github.com in terminal (not sure about the reason; I can access github on the web without any problem)
I found this page: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/http-2-stream-1-was-not-closed-cleanly-before-end-of-the-underlying-stream/96725/4, and used the host file.
And wait... It worked!
