How does one prevent packages from being installed under /usr/local/Homebrew/Cellar ?

Full explanation

I feel silly asking such a simple question in front of an already busy forum,
but I'm pretty confused at this point. I've read lots of posts about M1 Macs,
Intel vs Apple Silicon hardware, people reinstalling homebrew packages from
location to location.

There are too many scenarios for me to understand easily which recipe applies
to my situation. I wish there were a procedural roadmap somewhere --
(Maybe I can make one to help others?). Please enlighten me if the solution
is simple, and I just cannot pinpoint the answer through all the search
engine noise about different platforms.

Facts:

I am on an Intel Mac. Big Sur. Latest patch: 11.6.5
Most of my packages are Casks installed under /usr/local/Cellar.

I continually get the following WARNING message:

Warning: your HOMEBREW_PREFIX is set to /usr/local but HOMEBREW_CELLAR is set
to /usr/local/Homebrew/Cellar. Your current HOMEBREW_CELLAR location will stop
you being able to use all the binary packages (bottles) Homebrew provides. We
recommend you move your HOMEBREW_CELLAR to /usr/local/Cellar which will get you
access to all bottles."

I must be misunderstanding the intent of this message, because there appears to
be no way to do what the WARNING suggests.

I've tried uninstalling all my Casks from /usr/local/Homebrew/Cellar, and
into /usr/local/Cellar a few times using methods suggested on StackOverflow,
with only temporary success. I'm able to reinstall packages, but the
WARNING above just returns again the next time I install something. I've tried
updating brew. I've tried the 'brew update-reset' command. The WARNINGs just return.

Question: How does one do the following?

"[...] move your HOMEBREW_CELLAR to /usr/local/Cellar which will
get you access to all bottles."

I understand the part about getting access to all bottles. Right now, packages
are being forced to recompile from scratch with every install, which works, but
is impractically slow.

How do you "move your HOMEBREW_CELLAR" ? How does one stop packages
from being installed under /usr/local/Homebrew/Cellar by default? I've searched
through the FAQ, but I still feel like I am missing something obvious.

How did you install homebrew? Because this sounds like a tarbal install gone wrong. Additionally, please post when you actually get this warning.

I just performed the standard install recommended on the FAQ page -- the curl call that grabs a script called install.sh.
Is there another way to install that would set this var differently? Or can I set it myself? I'm honestly not sure how it is getting misset, but I could dig a bit and find out.

I believe you can skip the hassle and look up how to move files via the internet, it took me 5 minutes to find solutions.

If you installed Homebrew in the default location, i.e HOMEBREW_PREFIX == /usr/local, then HOMEBREW_CELLAR defaults to /usr/local/Cellar, so it looks like you manually set HOMEBREW_CELLAR to /usr/local/Homebrew/Cellar for some reason.

What is the output of the following:

echo $HOMEBREW_CELLAR
brew shellenv

I'm approaching the problem very naively, but willing to delve and learn. I don't know enough at present to grok how or why I would change any defaults, or even which defaults can be changed. I went with the standard, boilerplate install that is recommended on the Homebrew FAQ page. (It's a curl call that downloads an installer written in shell, called "install.sh".

RE: your question -- I did not manually set HOMEBREW_CELLAR, but I see now that the variable is defined in the install.sh script, so I'm guessing it's possible to change it? Here's how it is being set on my mac at present:

$ echo $HOMEBREW_CELLAR
brew shellenv

export HOMEBREW_PREFIX="/usr/local/homebrew";
export HOMEBREW_CELLAR="/usr/local/homebrew/Cellar";

It looks like the problem might be that HOMEBREW_CELLAR is being set to /usr/local/homebrew/Cellar, not /usr/local/Cellar, which sounds like it might fix the problem. I am definitely not setting it manually. Is there a way to manually set HOMEBREW_CELLAR to /usr/local/Cellar ? The only problem I can see would be that /usr/local itself seems to be unalterable (but everything below it would be, presumably).

This is the root problem:

$ brew shellenv
export HOMEBREW_PREFIX="/usr/local/homebrew";
[...]

brew shellenv tailors its output according to where Homebrew is actually installed. In this case, it's saying that you really installed Homebrew in /usr/local/homebrew, but manually set HOMEBREW_PREFIX to /usr/local for some reason, so it's no wonder Homebrew is confused.

The canonical way to address this is to reinstall Homebrew in the standard location (/usr/local), then everything will fall naturally into place. The official Homebrew installer does this automatically.

Failing which, you could try manually moving the /usr/local/homebrew/Cellar directory to /usr/local/Cellar, then export HOMEBREW_CELLAR=/usr/local/Cellar. You'd have to add the export HOMEBREW_CELLAR line to the startup file that currently contains your export HOMEBREW_PREFIX, then delete that export HOMEBREW_PREFIX line. There's no guarantee that this approach won't surface other problems in the future, though.

I had the same problem as you. Even after the uninstall/install dance, the problem persisted. I looked in the brew and brew.sh scripts and this is what i found out:

HOMEBREW_PREFIX is resolved based on the location of the brew script (the one you get when you do which brew). If this script is in /usr/local/bin, then HOMEBREW_PREFIX is /usr/local. If it is in /usr/local/Homebrew/bin, then HOMEBREW_PREFIX is /usr/local/Homebrew. This happens irrespective of wether or not you "manually set HOMEBREW_PREFIX to /usr/local for some reason", which you probably didn't.
Odds are that, as is my case, you have a link in /usr/local to /usr/local/Homebrew/brew. If in your $PATH the directory /usr/local comes before /usr/local/Homebrew/, then HOMEBREW_PREFIX is /usr/local; as you may have guessed HOMEBREW_PREFIX is /usr/local/Homebrew if not. So, this is not an issue of installation or you taking some kind of obscure action to "manually set HOMEBREW_PREFIX to /usr/local for some reason". It's just sloppy bash programming: checking if $0 is a link or an actual file would have solved this in the brew script.
This "feature" escalates quickly when you have a Cellar left over in /usr/local/Homebrew, because the brew.sh script checks if the directory ${HOMEBREW_REPOSITORY}/Cellar exists to assign it to HOMEBREW_CELLAR (HOMEBREW_REPOSITORY is actually /usr/local/Homebrew). I'm not sure why this is done, but I'm guessing there's a good reason. If this directory doesn't exist, then HOMEBREW_CELLAR is the expected ${HOMEBREW_PREFIX}/Cellar. I also have no idea why there's a Cellar in my /usr/local/Homebrew, I don't have the habit of changing default settings in brew just for fun.
Fortunately, the warning message already has the solution: simply move all contents of /usr/local/Homebrew/Cellar to /usr/local/Cellar and then delete the latter:

$ brew shellenv
export HOMEBREW_PREFIX="/usr/local";
export HOMEBREW_CELLAR="/usr/local/Homebrew/Cellar";
export HOMEBREW_REPOSITORY="/usr/local/Homebrew";
export PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin${PATH+:$PATH}";
export MANPATH="/usr/local/share/man${MANPATH+:$MANPATH}:";
export INFOPATH="/usr/local/share/info:${INFOPATH:-}";
$ rsync -aH --update --times --itemize-changes Homebrew/Cellar/ Cellar/
...
$ rm -fr Homebrew/Cellar/
$ brew shellenv
export HOMEBREW_PREFIX="/usr/local";
export HOMEBREW_CELLAR="/usr/local/Cellar";
export HOMEBREW_REPOSITORY="/usr/local/Homebrew";
export PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin${PATH+:$PATH}";
export MANPATH="/usr/local/share/man${MANPATH+:$MANPATH}:";
export INFOPATH="/usr/local/share/info:${INFOPATH:-}";

After doing this, I came on to a bump:

$ brew update
git: 'remote-https' is not a git command. See 'git --help'.
Error: Fetching /usr/local/Homebrew failed!

To fix this: brew reinstall git

This is typically the go-to solution to all sorts of mayhem that moving the cellar like this will cause. I also had a problem with jenv, but reinstall fixed it nicely.

So far, it seems to hold up as expected.

A few notes for fellow beginners who may need a little more help:

Make sure you cd ~ (or wherever you have installed homebrew) before running any rsync or cp commands
After trying the above a few times, I had totally borked by $PATH, so make sure you have slimmed it down by removing repetition to avoid this mess:

$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/user/bin/python

@kykyi I installed brew on the home directory and tried to run the resync commands to fix the issue but I think there's something wrong about my PATH because I'm using zsh. I'm not sure how to fix the PATH nor my brew situation anymore 😢

For those of us that managed to make this even worse for ourselves by thinking we could just create a symlink to the brew binary under /usr/local/bin or one of the other sub-directories, here's my story:

In my case, brew shellenv would report this exact path /usr/local/ as being my HOMEBREW_PREFIX, but then a which brew gave me the /opt/homebrew location. So I went into /usr/local and couldn't find anything about the Cellar. It wasn't until I checked /usr/local/bin and discovered a file descriptor in there for brew that I realised what I had done! And yes, I have a very bad memory, past-me seems to enjoy leaving future-me with stuff like this.

Hello,

I am quite desperate too and I would love some help with this issue.

I have a MacBook Pro M3, Sonoma 14.3.1.

When I run brew upgrade I get the following error:

brew upgrade

and it's right to say that it can't find anything there, because the Cellar is actually in /usr/local/Cellar where I can see several directories, etc.

When I run the brew shellenv, it looks ok:

export HOMEBREW_PREFIX="/usr/local";
export HOMEBREW_CELLAR="/usr/local/Cellar";
export HOMEBREW_REPOSITORY="/usr/local/Homebrew";
export PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin${PATH+:$PATH}";
export MANPATH="/usr/local/share/man${MANPATH+:$MANPATH}:";
export INFOPATH="/usr/local/share/info:${INFOPATH:-}";

and

$ which brew
/usr/local/bin/brew

The path looks ok but then it searches in the wrong place... Would anyone know how to fix, or move ahead, with this?

I assume you're intentionally running a Rosetta (Intel CPU emulation) Homebrew setup, in developer mode.

Try brew update-reset, then brew doctor again. Note that brew update-reset will nuke all uncommitted and unpushed changes in all your Homebrew taps, so definitely commit/push all the edits you want to keep first.

No, I am not intentionally running Rosetta emulation, I think I inherited this from my previous laptop. My previous Mac was Intel and I transferred all the setup to the new M3 machine. Therefore, possibly, Homebrew remained linked to the Intel configuration...

Any idea of how I could change that?

It's probably this:

Thanks for the suggestion, I uninstalled all of them, but I did not progress.
