Warning
The localization system is currently being overhauled - Do not follow the instructions in this document.
A new localization system is being developed on the feature-strings-catalog branch.
Once it releases, and there's a straightforward way to add new translations to the app, I'll announce it in the update notes and in this document.
If you have already written translations for Mac Mouse Fix following the instructions below, please send them to me – I'll do my best to manually integrate them into the new system.
Thank you for your patience and your interest in localizing Mac Mouse Fix.
Mac Mouse Fix 3 and later can be translated into different languages.
I already translated Mac Mouse Fix into German, my native language, and now you can translate it into your language, too!
In this Guide, you will learn how to add a language to Mac Mouse Fix and how to help keep Mac Mouse Fix's translations up-to-date.
Adding New Languages
To add a new language to the project, follow these steps:
Adding a Language to the App
noah-nuebling/mac-mouse-fix
repository on GitHub, then clone the fork to your computer.mac-mouse-fix
) and open the Xcode project..strings
and.stringsdict
files throughout the project.Tip: Open the
mac-mouse-fix
folder in Finder, then search for folders ending with.lproj
, to find all the.strings
and.stringsdict
files.Adding a Language to the Website
noah-nuebling/mac-mouse-fix-website
repository on GitHub, then clone the fork to your computer.mac-mouse-fix-website
) and opennuxt.config.ts
nuxt.config.ts > i18n > locales
.mac-mouse-fix-website > locales
folder and create a copy ofen-US.js
, then rename it to<Your language ID>.js
and put your translations inside it.mac-mouse-fix-website > Readme.md
Adding a Language to the GitHub
noah-nuebling/mac-mouse-fix
repository on GitHub, then clone the fork to your computer.mac-mouse-fix
) and openMarkdown > Code > markdown_generator.py
.markdown_generator.py > languages = { ...
.mac-mouse-fix > Markdown > Templates
and create a copy of theen-US
folder. Rename it to<Your language ID>
. This folder contains templates for different markdown documents, such asreadme_template.md
andacknowledgements_template.md
. Translate each of these templates and then compile the documents.mac-mouse-fix > Markdown > MarkdownReadme.md
.The steps here are very high-level and it's totally normal if you're confused about something! Especially if you're not familiar with Xcode and git. If you have any questions, just ask down below and I'll do my best to help.
If you only want to translate part of the project, for example only the app, but not the GitHub Readme, that's also totally fine.
For the translations, I highly recommend using ChatGPT and then refining its results. It's been a huge boost to the quality and efficiency of my German translations.
And that's it! If your translation is added to the project, of course you'll be credited as a contributor in the Acknowledgements.
Updating Translation Files
As I keep changing and adding to the text in Mac Mouse Fix, existing translations might become outdated.
The localization system attempts to automatically detect any such problems and list them in the "🌏 State of Localization 🌎" comment below.
Tip
To help resolve localization problems:
Find a file to update
Go to the "🌏 State of Localization 🌎" comment below, then go to the section of a file with problems that you want to resolve.
Start editing the file
Click the link for the translation of the file you want to update. This will open the GitHub page of the file.
Now click the edit button in the top right. (The little pen icon) Finally click on 'Fork this repository'.
Now you can make changes to the file!
Fix any problems with your file
Go through the potential problems for your file that are listed in the "🌏 State of Localization 🌎" comment, and fix them.
Note on
!IS_OK
flagIf you decide that a key-value-pair which is listed in the "🌏 State of Localization 🌎" is okay as it is and the value doesn't need to be updated, you can tell the localization system about this by adding a comment saying
!IS_OK
after the key-value pair. This will make it so the key-value-pair will not show up as a problem in the "🌏 State of Localization 🌎" anymore even if the value wasn't updated. For example, if the key-value pair is
"some.key" = "Some Translated UI Text";
you can update it to
"some.key" = "Some Translated UI Text"; // !IS_OK
To mark it as currently ok.
If you find that there's already a comment saying
!IS_OK
, you can tell the localization system that the key-value-pair is currently still ok, by adding another!
.For example, if the key-value pair is
'some.key': 'Some Translated UI Text', // !IS_OK
you can update it to
'some.key': 'Some Translated UI Text', // !!IS_OK
To mark it as still ok
For translation files that don't contain key-value-pairs (Such a the
.md
and.stringsdict
files), there is currently no way to mark them as ok to the localization system. But their entries shouldn't take up much space in the "🌏 State of Localization 🌎".Share your work
When you're done with your updates to the file, click 'Commit changes...' in the top-right. Then click 'Propose changes' and then click 'Create pull request'.
And that's it! Now your updates will be visible to me and I can accept them as changes into Mac Mouse Fix.
If your changes are accepted, you will be listed as a contributor of Mac Mouse Fix on GitHub, and I will shout you out in the next update notes.
Note that these instructions are for making your updates right in the browser on GitHub.com. If you are familiar with programming and git, or if you want to make more complex changes, you might want to make the changes locally on your computer. This requires some familiarity with git. The basic steps are: 1. Fork 2. Clone 3. Make your updates locally in Xcode 4. Build the app to test your translations in action 5. Commit 6. Push 7. Create a Pull Request.
If you have any questions, let me know, in a comment below.
