Suggestion

You can get away with running around with no cash on hand and when pirates board you you don't lose much.

Instead, if you have below a certain threshold of cash, the pirates just blow you up instead. This could be implemented by the pirates just continuing to shoot you when your disabled (as if they know you're poor), or even better, they board you as they do now, take whatever money you have, and when they realise you haven't got very much, then retarget your disabled ship, send you a rude message and murder you anyway.

The minimum required cash should probably be a percentage of the value of the current ship you're flying. So they don't expect much ransom money from a Llama with standard engines, but if you're flying a cruiser souped-up with milspec drives, they're going to expecting a bit more cash.

Admittedly, this isn't much of an exploit (you can just reload if you're hit by pirates anyway) but I also suggest it just because I think it's pretty funny if pirates murder you just because they're annoyed you didn't give them enough money.
