need more feedback on this, perhaps it could be a sort option

I think it is a sensible default. Sort option when set to something can disregard this i.e. Sorting by Name shall sort by name irrespective of whether it is a file or directory. Or even better we can include this as a checkbox turning it on would put all the directories at the top no matter what the sort order is (the sort order would be applied within the directories and files).

I like the idea of a checkbox. I'll have to think about where it makes sense to put that. I plan to implement a revised path display, search, sort ordering, and view mode today. So I will see if I have time to add that checkbox somewhere as well.
