Mapping the controls to the actual characters, not to the physical location of the key on the keyboard

As a French player, I spent most of the day trying to figure out why the mod wasn't working properly; in the end, it was through trial and error that I noticed this.

This led to a lot of confusion, and now that I identified the problem, this leads to a lot of frustration. Is there any way to fix this?
