- Universal Descriptors
- Adding Descriptors to enrich your understand of a Concept is a key part of the Concept / Descriptor Framework. Some descriptors appear extremely frequently - almost universally. We call them Universal Descriptors , and notate them as beginning with a ~ symbol.
- Here are are three examples - ~Problem Being Solved, ~How Works, and ~Solution .
- When learning about a system, it's useful to understand how it works
- When learning about a tool, it's useful to understand the “~Problems Being Solved” by that tool:
- When learning about a problem, it's useful to understand the solution to the problem
- Universal Descriptors are useful for a few reasons:
- Universal Descriptors
- You don't really understand something until you understand it in multiple ways. Encouraging yourself to add multiple Universal Descriptors helps you challenge your own understanding about an idea. You could also add normal descriptors, but having a pre-packaged set of descriptors makes this process much easier. (You can also further customize your pre-packaged sets of descriptors - see the Templates for Knowledge (Types and Slots) tutorial).
(您还可以进一步自定义预定义的Universal Descriptors——参阅 Templates for Knowledge (Types and Slots)教程)
- Being consistent with the phrasing of a descriptor helps you avoid the common challenge with flashcards of accidentally using different wording and then memorizing how the card looks rather than the actual concept. For example, here we always use ~Problem Being Solved rather than also using "what problem does this solve" or "how does this help"?
- This consistency can help build mental "scripts" that draw on these descriptors. For example, when trying to understand a new tool, you can ask yourself to understand its ~Problem Being Solved, ~Why Works , and ~How Works . Or when considering a position, you can ask yourself to understand the ~Argument For ,~Argument Against , and an ~Analogy。
- When possible, it's thus best to use a Universal Descriptor instead of a normal Descriptor.
