It is pretty early for a release date, but I am trying to get this version into a beta state by the end of April. The main goals of v3 are the following:

  • release an in browser extension for Chrome that can be used to create and inspect JA timelines. This goal informs all other goals.
  • simplify refs and create a dedicated way to deal with easings
  • replace interpolate function in favor of global property handlers (I am calling mixers at this point)
  • flatten out the timeline functions to improve readability and to be more compatible with a GUI editor
  • support nested timelines and adding web animation API Animations as nested timelines

None of this is 100% going to happen because of how early in the process I am. Here are my running notes for v3:

I'd love to hear feedback about these ideas. 😄

A quick update:

I was hoping to get a beta out by the 30th of April, but have hit more than a few stumbling blocks. I am at least another 3 weeks past the 30th (because extensions development is pretty challenging and I have had to pivot quite a bit around some initial assumptions of how it would work).

In the meantime, here is a video of a build from 2 weeks ago: https://youtu.be/K-MmVpjRpfM . In it, I am fading the google logo in live from the devtools.

I am pretty excited about where all of this is going. 😄

As an aside, I have decided that this will ship with 2 output options: Just Animate JSON and CSS Keyframes. It may not be a huge undertaking to provide export options for other formats like WAAPI or GSAP.
