See staged changes while committing

When committing, the commit window seems to always be a popup over everything. But sometimes I'd like to be able to see what I've staged as I'm writing the commit message, especially for a big commit with lots of parts. Is there some way to have the commit message window be off to a side or something so that I can see the staged changes pane at the same time?

Oops sorry, I think I just looked through the open discussions. Preserving the text in the commit window works!
