Too long posts rejected with non-specific error #1062

Hitting the "Post" button, when a post exceeds the allowed limit, the error message simply states "Failed to post status." This gives no indication wrt the underlying issue and how to solve it. A more speaking error message would help. A character counter for the compose field would be the cherry on top.
