Cannot reference the same scripture twice on the same page

I am trying to reference the same scripture in two different places in one Joomla! article. The first reference displays as a link and works perfectly (using the [can] feature). Any subsequent duplicates referencing the same scripture will not show as a link and will not function. Is there a way to circumvent this restriction? Thanks in advance.
