The ability to scan an item's barcode, then look it up on a registry like openfoodfacts.org would greatly cut down on the time spent on data entry when adding to inventory.
Some provisions would have to be made when dealing with products that are not yet present on the registry, eg allowing a volunteer or the admin to manually populate the information for submission to the registry, or skipping that task for later.

I would like to offer some time for this. I see you are thinking of using the openfoodfacts api to populate results based on barcode scanned. I could do this if I understand it right.
