Optional email-field in registration

It would be nice to be able to enter an email-address in the registration-form (shouldn't be visible in the public profile).

Shouldn't the email field, be necessary if we have one?

It would be a first step to verify valid users.

I didn't think about validation but something like "customer retention". Later it would be possible to send notifications etc.

Okay but i think it would be better, if we can handle each user the same way. And i think these days giving an email address is no problem. So we have not so much edge cases we have to care about.

I like the idea of notifications.
