The problem

Installed from latest standalone installer GitHubDesktopSetup-x64.exe, GitHubDesktop does not show up in Win10 Start Menu or from a Start Menu search, even after system restart.

The application is Version 3.3.14 (x64)

My system is Win10 Home, Version: 10.0.19045 Build 19045

It does start from %LOCALAPPDATA%\GitHubDesktop\

The last issue I found was closed because user failed to answer the question about %Localappdata%.

Release version

Version 3.3.14 (x64)

Operating system

Win10 Home, Version: 10.0.19045 Build 19045

Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. Download "GitHubDesktopSetup-x64.exe" from https://desktop.github.com/
  2. Run GitHubDesktopSetup-x64.exe
  3. After GitHub Desktop opens, close the program
  4. GitHub Desktop does not appear on the start menu, and cannot be found from start-menu search, although it can be run from %localappdata%\githubdesktop.

Additional context

  1. Uninstall doesn't work right from old Control Panel nor from Settings/Apps & Features. They fail because "Update.exe" is not found.
  2. If I just delete everything in the folders %LocalAppData%\GitHubDesktop and %appdata%\GitHubDesktop it seems to be uninstalled, but who knows.
  3. If I run the installer with ADMIN permissions all is good: There is a Start Menu presence! I do believe this is a change in default registry permissions because I'm seeing the same thing suddenly/newly occur with an application I develop.

Other people with this issue take note: If this issue doesn't get resolved, my money is on registry permissions. Try running as admin when you install.
