Video containers

Are file types that wrap video, audio and subtitles in a single files.

Popular container formats include:

Matroska

mkv

Extension stands for: "Matroska video".

WebM

Derived from mkv.

ogv

ogg

Open standard by https://xiph.org/

Before 2007, used for audio only or audio video.

Since 2007, https://xiph.org/ recommends using it only for audio only Vorbis, and using ogv for video.

mpg

One of the extensions for MPEG-1 video.

It is possible to concatenate mpg files directly via cat to get a larger one.

mp4

More linked to Apple.

Often contains H.264 or other MPEG-1
