The cultural capital of Kerala, the Poorams or temple
festivals in Thrissur draw in thousands of people every single year
as these carnivals encapsulate every single part of Kerala's rich
heritage. These are a hotbed of folk art performances and heritage
tours that will give you an in depth look into some of the grandest
traditions of the State. From majestic elephants to colourful
pulikali processions to the world renowned Thrissur Pooram, there is
always a festive atmosphere in the air. The district is also the
abode of several cultural centres like Kerala Kalamandalam, Sahitya

On the outskirts of the city at a distance of some 60 km, the
Athirappilly waterfalls mark one of the best places to visit
in Thrissur. Standing 80 ft tall and about 330 ft wide, these
falls are the largest in the state of Kerala. The falls are
located on the Chalakudy River, that originates from the
highest mountain in India outside of the Himalayas.

The oxygen jar of the city of Thrissur, Vilangan Kunnu is a
hillock located near the city. From its top, one can get a
fine view of the Thrissur city and Thrissur Kole Wetlands,
making the place one of the most favourite picnic spots in the
region.

Another gem on the Chalakudy River in the Athirappilly region
of Kerala, the falls are located between two major tourist
spots in the region; Athirappilly Falls and Vazhachal Falls.

This is the most spectacular festival of Thrissur that is
celebrated in the April-May months and was first instituted by
the erstwhile Maharaja of Cochin in the late 18nth century. It
is often called the pooram of poorams, meaning festival of
festivals and is celebrated in the Thekkinkadu maidan of the
central Vadakkumnathan temple located within the Swaraj Round.

This traditional festival falls in the months of March-April
and lasts for eight days. This popular Bharani Utsavam is
celebrated in the Kodungallur Bhagavathy temple and is
celebrated by the devotees by symbolically wearing
red-coloured costumes to please the Goddess ‘Kaavu Theendal’.
It’s an amazing sight to see thousands of men and women
singing and dancing in blood red apparels.

Onam is a festival that is celebrated throughout Kerala and by
Malayalis located all over the world. It's a four day festival
that is celebrated to reminisce the homecoming of King
Mahabali.On the last day of Onam known as the Naalam Onam,
Thrissur witnesses a sort of folk art known as Puli Kali.
Thrissur prides itself as being the cultural capital of Kerala
and this art form adds in an extra tinge of colour, sound and
creativity to the festival.
