Don't create redirection topic for merged threads

If you merge a thread, the forum creates a redirection thread. Is this necessary? Previously it did not. Example:

Before I did the merge we had two threads, about the same issue. Now we still have two threads: one the redirection notice, and one the actual thread, under it. So the topic listing is just as cluttered as before.

I have also come across merged threads, when I click the thread, then click the link to the merged thread, I get an error.............. "The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you.." This happens on ALL merged thread links.

It is. A topic merge still results in a leftover redirection topic (referred to as a "merged stub topic" in the Discourse settings).

I don't see any setting to disable this behavior. However, the forum does automatically delete the redirection topic some time after the merge. That duration is configurable via the delete merged stub topics after days forum setting. I have reduced the setting to the minimum of 1 day. It is an integer value so setting it to a fraction of a day is not possible (it truncates to 0), and setting it to 0 disables deletion.
