stuck on activating: slows down saving files, blocks creating new files

Summary

the ansible extension blocks me from creating a new file and adds much delay when saving an existing file. This is for all files, not just ones where the ansible language is selected. In the running extensions page it says "activating..." forever. the log output is empty, even with the vscode log level set to debug. Disabling the extension removes the blocking and re-enabling it re-introduces the blocking. This happens with all other extensions disabled, except for "windows default keybindings".
