Analysis of the Inside Political Donation History of Sports Owners

American professional sports owners have contributed nearly $47 million in federal elections since 2015.

Analysis: According to a joint study by ESPN and FiveThirtyEight, owners of American professional sports teams have collectively donated approximately $47 million to federal elections since 2015. Of this amount, they have allocated $10 million towards Republican initiatives and $1.9 million towards Democratic causes during the ongoing 2020 election season.

Over the course of six years, 40 individuals have contributed a minimum of $100,000 to support Republican causes, whereas 23 donors have surpassed the $100,000 mark in their contributions to Democratic causes. These disparities have played a role in shaping the outcomes.
