Cannot get nginx-proxy-manager to work (ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED)

Hello,

I am trying to expose my portainer dashboard. I have my domain pointing to my public IP thorugh CloudFlare (DNS only, not proxied). No matter what I try I seem to be getting a ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED error. Here are some of the things I tried:

• with mydomain.com routed to my public ip and my router configured to forward ports 80 & 443 to 40081 & 40443 respectively, which in turn forwards them to ports 80 & 443 inside the container. This is the only change from the docker-compose file on the quick start info. (all separate tests):
  • launched a pyton http server using python -m http.server inside the nginx container. Added a proxy to nginx that routed mydomain.com to http://0.0.0.0:8000
  • added a proxy to route mydomain.com to http://portainer:8000 (no SSL)
  • added a proxy to route mydomain.com to http://[portainer-ip]:8000 (no SSL)
  • added a proxy to route mydomain.com to https://portainer:9443 (no SSL)
  • added a proxy to route mydomain.com to https://[portainer-ip]:9443 (no SSL)
  • added a proxy to route mydomain.com to https://portainer:9443 (set up SSL certificate without DNS challenge)
  • added a proxy to route mydomain.com to https://[portainer-ip]:9443 (set up SSL certificate without DNS challenge)
  • added a proxy to route mydomain.com to https://portainer:9443 (set up SSL certificate WITH DNS challenge)
  • added a proxy to route mydomain.com to https://[portainer-ip]:9443 (set up SSL certificate WITH DNS challenge)

I am able to ping portainer and the portainer ip from inside the nginx container since they are both in the same user defined network . I am not getting any cloudflare errors so I am assuming that the cloudflare is routing correctly (not sure how to verify this). All of these tests have returned the error code ERROR_CONNNECTION_REFUSED. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Edit: Turns out that I can actually connect to my portainer dashboard if I access try to access my public domain from outside my network. I learned that this is due to something called NAT reflection, where basically if you try to access your public ip address from inside your network some routers won't actually allow that. Thanks a lot for your locked down routers spectrum :))))))))))))))))))
