I've been sitting with this for a few days now and do not understand this description. Perhaps this should be clarified so that I can be sure if the tag is wrong or not?

This character hasn't been changed since the beginning of the github repository according to the history. The documentation of the meaning of things like variant here is based on guesswork by me from reading Ulrich's posts on the mailing list and sometimes on here too. I'm not sure what it means here.
