underscores in a doi breaks latex compilation

When a bibliography record in the bib file contains a doi field, and the doi contains an underscore, compilation breaks.

have you tried escaping the DOI underscore?

Escaping the underscore in the doi did not work.
I think a better choice of bibliography style and/or document package might provide a clean solution, like the ones proposed here, for example.
