Instead of user themes, why not simply have a light mode and a dark mode with changeable accent color? All of the themes are fugly. Like a theme with a purple background looks gross in practice. As is, it seems more difficult to make an attractive theme when all of the backgrounds and buttons can be customized. Standardizing on black on light and light color on dark motif seems simpler and takes trying to contrive a good color palette out of the equation.

With themes, that is a completely unnecessary restriction / removal of capabilities, isn't it? There is absolutely nothing to stop you creating light and dark modes via themes, as these are really just themes themselves (if the capabilities of the theming system are sufficiently capable, which if it isn't can be improved upon)
