Only 20 years ago, most homes had only one phone line which only one person could use at a time. Hardly anyone had a mobile phone and not many people had e-mail.
But as can be seen in #5, this might be underestimating when mobile phones was available to the general public. There the comment is that most homes only had one phone and no mobile phone or email 30 years ago, not 20. I remember mobile phones starting to spread some years before 2000, so I guess it might be a better description to replace 20 with 30. Perhaps this differ from country to country?
